Introducing a new look for our meetings
Global mobile usage is growing fast – up 18% this year. More and more people are meeting their insurance provider, municipality, or doctor straight from their phone. We see the same shift at Compodium: while most hosts still start their meetings from a computer, guests are increasingly joining from mobile. This change inspired us to rethink how our meetings should look, feel, and perform.
Why are we changing the design?
Our vision is that our meetings should feel effortless – no matter where you join from and the users technical background and experience of using digital meetings. Optimizing for mobile requires more than technical performance; it’s also about clarity, simplicity, and design. The experience should let you focus on the meeting itself, not the interface around it.
Old vs. New design.
What’s changing?
With our first release, we’re rolling out a refreshed UI that makes meetings cleaner and more intuitive:
1. Color theme and background
Before: Black background. Bright colors in participants’ initials (when the camera was turned off). Active speaker highlighted with a blue frame.
New: Dark gray/blue background with softer tones and gradients in participant bubbles. Active speaker is now highlighted in green.
Why: Softer contrast for a calmer and more modern impression. Clearer and more intuitive indication of who is speaking.
2. Icons and bottom menu
Before: Larger icons with text labels in the middle. Participant icon in the top left with red notification. Chat icon in the top right.
New: Smaller and more compact icons with one-word labels. All icons gathered in the bottom menu along with other controls. (On mobile, the participant list and chat are still placed in the corners to make better use of the screen space.)
Why: Easier access and a more consistent control layout.
3. Leave meeting button
Before: Bottom, centered.
New: Bottom, to the right.
Why: Reduces the risk of accidental clicks and follows established design patterns in video meetings.
4. Status indicators for audio and video
Before: Muted microphone/camera indicated only with a crossed-out icon.
New: Muted microphone/camera indicated with clear red markers.
Why: Faster recognition of audio and video status.
5. New module when the host is alone in the meeting
Before: The host only saw themselves. A notification about waiting room management appeared when someone joined, but the waiting room list was hard to find for inexperienced users.
New: A new module provides clear guidance when you’re alone in the meeting (for portal users):
Shows where the list of waiting visitors can be found
Provides a direct link to the waiting room for quick invitations
Creates a safer and more explanatory experience so that hosts don’t feel uncertain about visitor status
Why: Prevents confusion and makes it easier to invite or manage guests.
What’s next?
This is just the first iteration. These updates focus on UI, but we’re not stopping here. With upcoming user testing, we’ll continue refining how and where certain features live – making the experience easier, smarter, and better suited to real-life meetings. We’re especially grateful for all the user feedback that brought us here. Next, we’ll improve:
Visibility of guest invites into meetings and it’s journey after being invited
How the layout and participant panel is shown during screen sharing (or spotlight view)
Simpler ways to change devices mid-meeting
